Studies and research
These are the main research tracks carried on by the Laboratorio Teatrale, coordinated by Sandra Pietrini:
- Studies on medieval theatre. This research line derives from the scientific production of Sandra Pietrini, which over the years has been enriched with national and international collaborations. Thanks to her participation, since 2006, to the international research group LaiRem, (recognized at ministerial level as “grupo de investigación consolidado”), this research track has given life to seminars, workshops and other initiatives, which also involved undergraduates and students. It was then enriched, from 2012, by her participation to the international research group Iconodansa. Traza y figura de la danza en la larga edad media: corpus iconográfico, textual y etnográfico en la península ibérica y su proyección latinoamericana;
- Studies on the actors and acting treatises. Various publications are referred to this line of research. Some of them are accessible through the publications of the editorial series “Reperti” of the University of Trento and are realized also through the contribution of colleagues who cooperate with the Laboratorio Teatrale. This line of research also involves the Università L’Orientale di Napoli and the Normale di Pisa;
- Studies on Shakespeare and the rewriting of the classics. The project has already been the subject of two international symposiums organized in Trento (Shakespeare’s Characters Transposed: Iconography, Adaptations, Cultural Exchanges and Staging, 12-14 November 2019; Picturing Drama. Illustrazioni e riscritture dei grandi classici dal 1700 ai nostri giorni, 20-22 March 2013, Shakespeare off-scene. Shakespeare un-seen. Visualizing un-staged events in iconography, adaptations, productions, 29-30 October 2015) and several publications. The research was launched in 2011 thanks to some local and national funding. It gave rise to the creation of the Arianna database: a digital archive of images and texts freely available online. This project is carried out by the research group of the Laboratorio Teatrale and makes use of the collaboration of some important Italian institutions, such as the Centro di Documentazione sul Melodramma della Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and the Biblioteca Federiciana di Fano, which has recently published Sandra Pietrini’s critical edition of an adaptation of the Hamlet for the company of Cesare Rossi. The project also boasts the collaboration of some important foreigner institutions, such as the Centro de estudos de teatro in Lisbon, the TheaterMuseum in Vienna and the Española de Música Library y Teatro Contemporáneos of the Fundación Juan March of Madrid;
- Studies on the relationship between performance and philosophy. The research line studies the philosophical implications of theatrical theories and practices, as well as the theatrical forms of philosophical representations, such as that of the Platonic dialogues. Among the projects underway, one can mention the column Teatrosofia, which reconstructs the ways in which ancient philosophers interpreted the art of the actor (edited by Enrico Piergiacomi).
