Fabio Bagagiolo - WebPage

Project Role:  Principal Investigator

Biosketch: Fabio is researcher in Mathematical Analysis at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Trento. He received the Laurea degree in mathematics from the University of Padova in the year 1994 and the PhD degree in mathematics in the year 1998 (national commission in Rome, courses attended at the University of Trento). Between 1998 and 2001 he hold positions as resarch fellow at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Padova, at the Department of Hydraulics of University of Padova, at the Center for Nonlinear Analysis of the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and at the department of Mathematics and the Max-Planck Institute in Leipzig.  He also visited the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris, the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bordeaux, the Department of Mathematics of the University of Växjö. His main resarch fields are viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, dynamic programming for optimal control problems, nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations and their weak formulations in Sobolev spaces, mathematical models of hysteresis, differential games and mean field games.

 
OptHySYS activity: Fabio is mainly involved in dynamic programming and Hamilton-Jacobi equations for hybrid and thermostatic optimal control problems and in hybrid formulations of hysteresis models.

Enrico Bertolazzi - WebPage

Project Role: Numerical Analysis Expert

Biosketch: Enrico received the Laurea degree in mathematics from University of Trento, Trento, Italy, in 1990. He is an Associate Professor with University of Trento. He was with a small company develop- ing numerical algorithm for computer-aided manufacturing. His research interests include numerical analysis and finite volumes for convective dominated and hypersonic flow, discrete maximum principle, constrained optimal control, and scientific programming.

 
OptHySYS activity:  Enrico is involved in the development of numerical tools for solving the time optimal control problem of a car-like vehicle and in trajectory planning with clothoids.
 

Andrea Bisoffi - WebPage

Project Role: Doctoral Student 

Biosketch: Andrea received his M.Sc. cum laude in Automatic Control Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2013, discussing a thesis about planning the energy optimal trajectory for a road with traffic light intersections. He enrolled on his PhD at the University of Trento in 2014 where he has started his research in hybrid systems, and has enriched his knowledge of nonlinear dynamical systems. During his PhD he visited the University of Cambridge, UK, for the study of reset control of mechanical systems, under the supervision of Fulvio Forni. His research interests include hybrid and nonlinear control theory with applications to mechanical systems, and automotive applications.

 
OptHySYS activity: Andrea is mainly investigating hybrid laws for optimal periodic trajectories in mechanical systems.
 

Matteo Cocetti WebPage

Project Role: Doctoral Student

Biosketch: Matteo Cocetti received the B.Ed in Mechatronic Engineering from the University of Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy, and the M.Sc. in Robotics Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy, both cum laude. During his studies has been visiting scholar at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio US, where he worked on output regulation for overactuated systems. After the degree he won a research fellowship on the topic Optimal control for Hybrid Systems, DII, University of Trento, Italy. Currently he is enrolled as a PhD student at the Industrial Engineering Department of the University of Trento. His research interests include output regulation for over-actuated systems, multi-agent systems and hybrid systems.

 
OptHySYS activity: Matteo is involved in the developing of control and optimization algorithms for nonlinear dynamical systems with hybrid behaviors.
 

Luca De Pascali - WebPage

Project Role: Doctoral Student

Biosketch: Luca received the B.E. in Industrial Engineering in 2012 and the M.Sc. in Mechatronics Engineering in 2015 at the University of Trento. He performed his master thesis research activity at the Technische Universitaet in Munich (TUM), Germany, working on cooperative manipulators. He is enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Trento. He is currently a visiting scholar at Clemson University - International Center of Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville, South Carolina US, where he is working with Dr. Simona Onori on optimal control techniques for hybrid electric vehicles. His research interests include optimal control of hybrid dynamical systems and modelling of hybrid powertrain.

Daniele Fontanelli WebPage

Project Role: Research Fellow and joint coordinator of project tasks

Biosketch: Daniele received the M.S. degree in Information Engineering in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree in Automation, Robotics and Bioengineering in 2006, both from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy.  He was a Visiting Scientist with the Vision Lab of the University of California at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, US, from 2006 to 2007.  From 2007 to 2008, he has been an Associate Researcher with the Interdepartmental Research Center ``E. Piaggio'', University of Pisa.  From 2008 to 2013 he joined as an Associate Researcher the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science and from 2014 the Department of Industrial Engineering, both at the University of Trento, Trento, Italy.  He has authored and co-authored more than 70 scientific papers. His research interests include real-time control and estimation, clock synchronisation algorithms, resource aware control, visual servoing, localisation algorithms and service robotics.

OptHySYS activity: Daniele is mainly involved in the formulation of the case study of the hybrid dynamical system and on the development of the optimal control design.
 

Marco Frego WebPage

Project Role: Research Fellow and joint coordinator of project tasks

Biosketch: Marco recevived the BS degree and the MS degree in Mathematics in 2010, the PhD in Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering in 2014 from the University of Trento. He joined the Institute for Mathematics of the Hamburg Unversity of Technology (TUHH) from 2014 to 2015. From 2015 he joined the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science  at the University of Trento. His research interests include optimal control, numerical optimisation, clothoid curves, numerical linear algebra, coding theory, cryptography and computational algebra.

 
 
OptHySYS activity: Marco is currently involved in the optimisation of an hybrid car-like vehicle in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science.
 

Paolo Lecca WebPage

Biosketch: Dr. Paola Lecca received a M.S. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Trento (Italy) in 1997 and a PhD in Computer Science in 2006 from the International Doctorate School in Information and Communication Technologies at the University of Trento (Italy). Since 1998 she held Researcher and Principal Investigator positions in research centers and in academia. From 1998 to 2000 she was Research Assistant at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler - Center for Information Technologies of Trento by the research unit of Predictive Models for Biomedicine & Environment. From 2001 to 2002 Dr. Lecca worked at the Department of Physics of University of Trento in the area of data manipulation and predictive modelling in research programs of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics. In 2006 she joined to The Microsoft-Research University of Trento Centre for Computational and Systems Biology (COSBI), Italy. At COSBI Dr. Lecca led the group of Data Manipulation and Knowledge Inference. From 2012 to 2015 Dr. Lecca continued her researches at the Laboratory of Computational Oncology of the Centre for Integrative Biology (CIBIO) of University of Trento, Italy. She is currently collaborating with the Department of Mathematics of University of Trento, where she develops optimized techniques of simulation of hybrid (stochastic and deterministic) dynamical biochemical systems.

She is Professional Member of Association for Computing Machinery and author of seventy publications including books and journal and conference papers on international journals in computational biology, bioinformatics, and biophysics. She carries on an intense editorial activity as editor and reviewer for high impact factor journals in these subjects, and leads the organization of school and symposia of bioinformatics.

Rosario Maggistro - WebPage

Project Role: Doctoral Student 

Biosketch:  Rosario Maggistro received the B.Sc. in Mathematics and the M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Messina, Italy, both cum laude. Currently he is a PhD student at the department of Mathematics of the University of Trento. He has been visiting research student at the department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering of the Sheffield University ,UK, where he worked on dynamical networks via mean field game. His research interests include viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, optimal control on network, optimal control problem with discontinuities and mean field game.

 
OptHySYS activity: Rosario is mainly working on problems of optimal control on networks using a hybrid delayed thermostatic approximation of the optimal behavior of the system in the junctions points. Other arguments are mean field games for jumping Markov processes and switching controllabiilty for swimming problems.
 

Luigi Palopoli WebPage

Project Role: Computer Engineering Expert

Biosketch: Luigi is Associate Professor at the Dipartimenti di Scienza e Ingegneria dell'Informazione (DISI), University of Trento. He recieved his PhD degree from the Scuola Superiore S. Anna in Pisa in 2002. His main research interests include soft real--time systems, control systems with computation constraints and Assistive Robotics. He has been authors of more than 80 papers in these areas and has been coordinator of a European Research Project on Active Ageing (www.ict-dali.eu). He is currently coordinator of an H2020 European project (www.ict-acanto.eu) on the same topic.

 
 
 
 
OptHySYS activity: The main activities of Luigi in the OptHySys project revolve around real--life applications of hybrid control systems, in the automotive domain. Specific activities in the area are on optimal planning and control of high speed electric vehicles using hybrid techniques.

 Biosketch: Marco Sabatini is full professor of Mathematical Analysis. His main research interests are: differential equations, Hilbert 16th problem, limit cycles, bifurcation theory, stability theory, centers' period function, polynomial differential systems, global univalence problems, control theory.

Luciano Tubaro - WebPage

Project Role: Stochastic Proocesses Expert

Biosketch: Luciano Tubaro is full Professor in Probability. He has worked in the field of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, using the Semigroup theory. He obtained results of existence and uniqueness of solutions using the “stochastic characteristic” method in the linear case and in nonlinear case. Moreover, he also studied the existence of periodic measures for some class of stochastic differential equations and problems of non linear stochastic differential equations in Hilbert spaces perturbed by a white noise with two parameters, as for example in the case of stochastic quantization, Cahn-Hilliard equation and Kardar-Parisi-Wu equation. He has also studied integro-differential equations with noise and stochastic equations in infinite dimension in bounded domains with Neumann boundary conditions.

Biosketch: Luca received the Laurea and the Ph.D. degrees from the University of Roma Tor Vergata (Italy) in 1995 and 2000, respectively. He has been Assistant Professor in control engineering at the University of Roma, Tor Vergata (Italy), from 2000 to 2006 and then Associate Professor. Since 2012 he is Directeur de Recherche at the LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse (France) and since 2013 he holds a part- time associate professor position at the University of Trento, Italy. Luca Zaccarian's main research interests include analysis and design of nonlinear and hybrid control systems, modeling and control of mechatronic systems. He has served in the organizing committee and TPC of several IEEE and IFAC conferences. He has been a member of the IEEE-CSS Conference Editorial Board and an associate editor for Systems and Control Letters. He is currently a member of the EUCA-CEB, an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and the IFAC journal Automatca. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE-CSS in 2014 and he was a senior member of the IEEE since 2009 and a fellow of the IEEE since 2016. He is currently Student Activities Chair and Associate Editor of Electronic Publications (Conference Information) for the IEEE-CSS. He was a recipient of the 2001 O. Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award given by the American Automatic Control Council.

Marta Zoppello - WebPage

Project Role: Research Fellow and joint coordinator of project tasks

Biosketch: Marta Zoppello received her Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Padova, Italy, with subject thesis in Mathematical Physics. Her main research interests are in controllability of physical systems and in particular of slender micro-swimmers. She collaborates with researchers at SISSA Trieste and in France.

 
OptHySYS activity: Marta is studying the controllabilty of micro-swimmers by hybrid hysteresis control laws and the application of the Lie algebra/geometrical control tools to the controllability of system with hsyeresis.
