Principal Investigator

Daniele Zonta

Daniele Zonta achieved his Doctorate in Structural Mechanics at the University of Bologna in 2000, and worked as a Post-doctoral Researcher at the University of California, San Diego, in the period 2000-2001. Currently, he is Professor at the University of Strathclyde, UK, Associate Professor at University of Trento, Italy, and holds a courtesy appointment at the Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the Italian National Research Council. Dr. Zonta is cofounder of Intelligent Infrastructure Innovation, a startup company of the University of Trento. In 2014, Dr. Zonta was awarded SHM Person of the Year by the SAGE SHM editorial board. He is the author of over one hundred technical  publications.

Research interests: Infrastructure Management; Structural Health Monitoring (SHM); and Sensor and Information Technology; all as applied to civil infrastructure.

Valentina Piccolo

I am a Ph.D. student driven by the deep passion to pursuing significant new results that go well beyond the specific tasks of conceiving new, and reliable, devices for structural health monitoring. The intrinsic necessity of having scientific challenges as continuous stimulations for my research, the goal of giving real contributions to society for improving the scientific knowledge in engineering and related fields and my deep belief that the intermingling between humanities, science and engineering allows for reaching real breakthroughs are the driving forces of my activity.

Research interests: Applied solid mechanics at finite strains; mechanical metamaterials; optomechanics at finite strains; modeling the mechanical behavior of novel polymeric materials.

Angela Beltempo

I received my master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Pavia, Italy. After graduation, I collaborated with the research group of Professor Auricchio (University of Pavia) and with Professor Alfano (Brunel University of London, UK) for developing a new tapered beam model based on a mixed variational method. I am currently a PhD student at the University of Trento and my supervisors are Professor Bursi and Professor Zonta.

Research interests: Bridge Modelling, and Development of Energetic Formulations for Linear Viscoelastic Problems.
